The Base: A sailing school, designed by architects Héctor Fernández Elorza and Carlos Garcia Fernandez. An incredible project, which resembles a large shipping container with windows to the side, taking advantage of the light and do not lose sight of the sea from the port. A space that is perfectly integrated in the environment, primarily constructed of galvanized steel for the main structure, white viroc panels and coverage hurdle and wire.

Our challenge: to create a practical space , at the same time welcoming, with a shoestring budget and in record time ,20 days!

A big project ahead…..sea view

Three spaces, two side hosting a reception side of the school and the other, the ship’s sails and clothing locker. The central space, which communicates with a terrace, serves as a sailing school, summer zone partners and school during the winter.

Once assigned the project, we quickly got to work. We decided to collaborate with Pablo Alvarez de Lara in this project , architect and founder of Palps.

In this project there was no room to our Balakata´s fabrics but to our “savoir faire”…

We connected from the beginning with Pablo in the project approach. Wood, for a very blank space when we needed to give a little warmth, fabrics protected with Teflon to resist moisture and multifunctional furniture, to cover all the needs of this space at different times of the year.

Pablo started designing with furniture, that was what was going to take longer and quickly decided to make two types of base units, not to interrupt the view from one side to another of the windows , they would go on the sides of the Sailing School.

We bet on birch phenolic lined duplex as aesthetically matched material space, and for being very resistant to moisture. To finish them off, wheels, to give versatility to the room, according to different needs.

COCKTAIL CABINET

Inspired by the interior design of a boat. A cabinet in taking advantage of all the spaces, and integrating a refrigerator, a dishwasher and an ice-maker. Swing doors with hydraulic arms to open in the most convenient: to raise the front appears a cupboard with vessels, under a store with drinks, back a wine rack, drawers for snacks, and a lid that discovers a hidden trash.

SAILING SCHOOL OFFICE:

Furniture reversible. On the front, library hosts the summer, the reverse gives the teacher a class table to teach during the winter. In turn the table serves as office storage place.

For the common area, we decided on a simple director chairs are wood with canvas with Teflon, resistant to moisture and dirt, with the club’s logo screenprinted on the back. The roundtables, beech painted white and resistant to moisture.

As a final touch to this space, we proposed to the school, the walls hung photo exhibitions that enliven the space renewing it every so often. The first exhibition, the photographer Sevillano , Javier Molina Lamothe.

We really enjoyed working with PaLPS and the Royal Yatch Club of Sotogrande!

And this is only the first phase of the project….. hopefully we can soon start working on the rest !
